On our Africa gateway to Lake Kivu in Rwanda, we spent 4 days and 3nights at Serena Lodge Lake Kivu Rwanda. It is 2 kms from Congo border and near 12 000 strong refugee camp
But the main attraction of course was the gorilla tracking. We were lucky to meet with the tribe within 90 minutes of medium stride walking.
What an experience to be among them for 1 hour. But you need to really do it twice! Permits are not cheap $750 a time but since you have to travel so far, 4 hr flight from Jhb to Kigali and 4 hr drive time to Lake Kivu. Highly recommended! “It is the pearl of Rwanda”
It is a wonderful think to be called by name, if you met a stranger somewhere say in the wild during a gorilla trek and mingle with them for a short time then part ways and you meet them again at the airport as you wait for your flight and this person still remembers your name would be a great feeling.

- On the morning of your trek, your guides will provide an orientation and explain the rules of mountain gorilla trekking. These include keeping a safe distance from mountain gorillas, how to behave near mountain gorillas, and what to do if a mountain gorilla comes toward you.
- You will have several guides and trackers. Some will stay with your group, leading you through the forest toward where your mountain gorilla family was last seen. Others will move ahead, looking for the family’s current location.
