Gorilla nesting & Denesting (Great Apes of Rwanda)
Gorilla nesting refers to the process by which gorillas create their sleeping areas, known as nests. These nests are used for relaxing, whether it be for sleeping at night or taking a nap during the day. Gorillas as they move the create atrial and when it gets the sun set in the evening they start to make nests because they are not sure where to find food, why the night finds them is the they build their nests, however on the gorilla don’t destroy their nest after sleeping . Gorillas build nests for both diurnal and nocturnal use. Nests are typically rudimentary clusters of branches and foliage, measuring 2 to 5 ft (0.61 to 1.52 m) in diameter, and are built by individual organisms. Gorillas, in contrast to chimpanzees or orangutans, typically rest in ground-level nests. Young gorillas engage in nesting with their mothers, but they start constructing their own nests after reaching three years of age. Initially, these nests were built near their mothers’ nests to provide additional protection.
The process of gorilla nesting in Volcanoes, Rwanda
Gorilla nests are randomly scattered and the choice of tree species for nest sites and buildings seems to be based on opportunistic factors. The construction of nests by great apes is today recognized not just as a form of animal architecture, but also as a significant example of tool utilization. During your gorilla safari, whether you choose to visit Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, you will have the opportunity to watch the gorillas’ nesting behavior during your meeting with them, either while trekking or participating in a habituation exercise.
