Detailed itinerary of 3 days Nyungwe chimpanzees tracking, canopy, and cultural tour
Day 1:Transfer to Nyungwe via the National Museum and King’s Palace.
The tour driver shall pick you up from your hotel in Kigali at 7 am and depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southwest of Rwanda. The journey to the park takes 5-6 hours but you will have to make a stopover at the Nyanza Kings Palace and Huye at the Ethnographic Museum to discover the country’s history and tradition. Visit the King’s Palace, a reconstructed traditional royal residence. Encounter the majestic Inyambo cattle, known for their elegant horns and deep symbolic importance in Rwandan culture
Explore the Ethnographic Museum, a place with some of Africa’s finest collections and cultural artifacts. You will have lunch at the museum restaurant or any good eatery in the nearby town.
Later proceed to the park and check into the booked accommodation for relaxation, dinner, and night stay.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk
Wake up early for breakfast at the lodge and prepare for a long day of activities. The driver will take you for the briefing at Uwinka park center which starts at the park center by 5:30 am. After the briefing you will be assigned to atrial depending on the number of people available and ready for tracking. with the leadership of park rangers and guides, you will either take the Uwinka or Chamudongo trail.
Unlike mountain gorillas, chimpanzees spend most time in the forest canopy thus making it very inconvenient for those who want to take photos. They are also very mobile and rarely stay in one place for a long time like gorillas. The good thing is that they are very noisy and easy to spot even in very thick forest jungles. Throughout the activity, the park guides will share information about each of the wild species encountered – their behavior, feeding, and reproductive habits.
After an hour with the chimps, you will return to the hotel for lunch and refreshment. In the afternoon go for canopy walk where you will walk on suspended bridge for 2 hours as you enjoy the forest creatures and canopy at an aerial view. The canopy walk rewards with breathtaking views of the lush forest provides chances of seeing animals that spend more time in the tall trees like monkeys and rare birds. If you have a camera or binoculars, you can have the best photography. After the walk, return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Colobus monkey trekking and return to Kigali.
On this last day of your trip, after an early morning breakfast you will return to the park center for a briefing about colobus monkey tracking. this time you will go to Gisakura center and later trek at the forest edge where the colobus monkeys are often spotted. The tracking lasts for 2-3 hours because these monkeys do not go deep into the forest. After the trek, return to the accommodation , check out and travel back to Kigali.
